Everything You Need to Know About Oral Sex!

Oral sex is a type of a sexual activity that can be done through oral stimulation between partners. It can be done for a lot of reasons, whether you want to spice up your relationship, you’re not ready to have sex, or just want to try something new! However, although oral sex can be an exciting sexual activity to try, there are also some precautions to take, as well. Keep reading to learn about what oral sex is, common myths, and how to stay safe while doing it!

What is Oral Sex?

Oral sex is a sexual activity that uses your mouth, lips, and/or tongue to stimulate another person’s genitals. It can involve, but not limited to sucking or licking a penis, vagina, vulva, clitoris and/ or an anus. It can involve any combination of partners, whether it’s a man stimulating a woman, a woman stimulating a woman, or a man stimulating a man or any other combination out there!

Common Myths Answered

  • Can Oral Sex cause pregnancy?

    • No! – It is absolutely impossible to get pregnant from oral sex, even if the ejaculation is swallowed. The only way to get pregnant from ejaculation or pre-ejaculation is if it enters into the vagina. When ejaculation is swallowed, it enters the stomach and never interacts with vaginal organs.

  • Can my oral health be affected?

    • Yes! – When engaging in oral sex many people don’t even think about what sexual fluids can do to your mouth. However, just like you would brush your teeth after eating a meal, you should do this after oral sex, too! This is because semen is often acidic and can damage your teeth if you don’t brush after oral sex.

  • Can I get an STI with oral sex?

    • Yes! – Contrary to popular belief many STI’s can be contracted through oral sex. For example, herpes can be contracted due to the skin to skin contact that happens during oral sex. Other STI’s can infect your throat due to oral sex like gonorrhea and chlamydia, and more serious STI’s that can infect you include syphilis, hepatitis B and HPV.

  • No! – Whether it’s oral sex or sexual penetration, infections will be spread if barrier protection is not used. This means, a condom or dental dam must be used in order to defend against the spread of disease. Any sort of mouth rinsing, whether it’s alcohol, soap and water, or whatever else that is thought of will not protect against an STI.

How to Practice Safe Oral Sex

The best way to practice safe oral sex is having the receiver of the oral sex wear a dental dam or condom. This is the best protection because it acts as a barrier from any possible infection and your mouth. Other ways to reduce the risk of STI’s is avoiding oral sex if you or someone else has an STI, has cuts or ulcers in their mouth or genitals, or if the giver of the oral sex has a throat infection. These are all signs that increase the likelihood of spreading an STI, so it’s important to avoid situations that involve these risks.

Overall, oral sex is fun activity to change up your sex life, but it still requires protection and consent. Whether it’s to spice up your sex life, trying something new, or you prefer oral sex, remember to use a barrier method to avoid contracting any STI’s. As long as both partners are on the same page with the exploration, have fun and enjoy!
